What this site is
Stoughton Waterproofing publishes practical, detailed guides about the water problems that affect houses from the ground up. Wet basements, foundation cracks, drainage systems, sump pumps, crawl spaces, and moisture control.
We started it for a simple reason. Search for "wet basement" and most of what comes back is a sales page. Every article ends with a phone number, every diagnosis points toward a five figure system, and almost nobody explains the cheap thing you should try first.
There is a real gap between "buy our waterproofing package" and a technical building science paper. This site aims to sit in that gap.

Why we publish the guides too
Roofing and foundation water are the same story at two ends of the building. Rain lands on the roof, the gutters decide where it goes, and what happens in the first ten feet of soil decides whether it ends up in the basement.
We see that chain from the top. The guides on this site are our attempt to explain the rest of it, including the parts that cost thirty dollars rather than several thousand.
How we write
Our articles follow a few consistent principles.
Cheapest fixes first. Almost every guide on this site works from free and low cost interventions upward. Gutters, downspouts, and grading come before drainage systems, because they resolve a large share of cases at a fraction of the cost.
Real numbers. Cost ranges, measurements, specifications, and thresholds. Fifty seven inches to the centre of hung art. Six inches of fall in the first ten feet. Forty five to fifty percent relative humidity. Vague advice is not useful advice.
Explaining the mechanism. Knowing why water moves through concrete, or why a horizontal crack differs from a vertical one, lets you evaluate a contractor's recommendation instead of simply accepting it.
Saying when to stop. Several of our articles tell you to put the tools down and call a structural engineer. Bowing walls, sewer backups, and combustion appliances in sealed crawl spaces are not do it yourself territory, and we say so plainly.
Admitting limits. Building science is regional. Soil, climate, water table, and code vary enormously. We say when something depends on your specific situation rather than pretending there is one universal answer.
Accuracy and corrections
We aim to be accurate, and we will get things wrong sometimes. Codes change, products change, and best practice evolves.
